10 on the 10th: The call of the carbs

In addition to ramping up my exercise routine a little these past two weeks, I've been trying - TRYING - to eat better. Because what good is it to burn off all those calories if you're just going to pack them back on again in one fatal swoop of cheesecake?

So I've been doing a sort of pseudo-version of the South Beach Diet - pseudo because I haven't really been following it to the letter, but rather I'm using it as sort of a guideline. (And if that right there doesn't sound like some sort of loophole for cheating, I don't know what does).

Suffice it to say that I have had my fair share of chicken, spinach, ricotta cheese, and broccoli these past few weeks. And while I love all of these, sometimes a girl just needs a piece of bread, you know?

Meredith is hosting her 10 on the 10th carnival today. And I immediately knew what my 10 things were going to be this month....

The foods that I cannot eat, the ones on the bad carb list, but the ones that are just so good. Not necessarily my favorite foods ever, but since I am deprived right now, these are the ones that popped into my head. And they are sounding mighty good.

  • 1. Mashed Potatoes. Last week I made myself some mashed cauliflower to try and quiet my potato cravings. And while they weren't terrible, they aren't mashed potatoes. Not by a long shot. It's futile to even try and pretend.
  • 2. Cinnamon Streusel Apple Pie. Sometimes I make this without the crust, which cuts down on the carbs, and ostensibly, the guilt. You should see Savannah put this away - the girl knows something good when she sees it.

  • 3. A baked potato from Pappadeaux. If you have never had the pleasure of eating one of these, imagine the biggest potato you have ever seen, topped with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon (real bacon, crisp and crumbly), and chives. Heaven.

  • 4. A slice of fresh-from-the-oven Marbled Rye Bread. This is the only yeast bread that I have ever successfully made, which might explain why it's my favorite.

  • 5. Pizza. I'm not picky - any kind will do, but my favorite is veggie with some spicy green chile.

  • 6. My Grandma's Hash Brown Casserole. Full of cheese, and french onion dip, and other sinful things that have the audacity to go straight to my hips.

  • 9. Chips and salsa. We used to buy chips. I would tell myself that they were for my hubby's lunches that he would take to work, and then give myself strict instructions to stay away from them.

Do you know how hard it is to resist the call of an already-open bag of chips?

So yeah. We don't buy chips anymore.

  • 10. A big plate of Mexican food. Beans and rice. Enchiladas, or maybe a tostada. Or maybe both.

Should I be embarrassed that some form of potatoes made 3 of these 10 spots?

Mer, thank you so much for hosting!

I think I am allergic to all 10! The reaction? Swelling of the mid-section! Ha... So, so sad.

Yes, I think Linda is brewing up something for us. ;)

You have such a beautiful family!

A girl definitely needs a piece of bread sometimes. :-)

It sounds like you're doing great, girl!

I'm going now to drool over the German chocolate cheesecake.

My husband lost 40 lbs on the SB diet. I gained 40. I was pregnant.... ;) He raved about how much better he felt while doing it. Carbs are my bff, so I can't even imagine. I'm allergic to potatoes, but all the rest? I'd run into a burning building for them. It's like that....

the chips are what get me!! And you are right, no resisting an open bag! It is soooo hard to diet with teenage boys in the house!!

Good for you for having the will power to stay away from those things!

Oh, you are a girl after my own heart. Potatoes...any way, shape or form. Chips, mashed, baked, the french/fried type...they are ALL my weakness! You are so brave to do this before Easter! I'm very proud of you! I will have an extra helping of the "mashed" sort, just for you at my Easter dinner! Cause that's just what friends do for each other.

Potatoes, chocolate and pastries, oh, my!

How I heart some Mexican food, too.

Thankfully, these beautiful foodie words aren't artery-clogging, or we'd all be in trouble. :)

Excellent job, Jackie, at really doing some healthy changes.

Man! I am hungry and I am not even trying to stay away from carbs! I won't tell you that I love potatoes, cuz I know it won't help. ;)

Now I am hungry...good for you taking the steps to eat better. Just remember that you CAN have the food you love. It is all about portion control and moderation.

There is nothing like a warm home-made slice of bread with butter on it. I can't wait until I am able to cook and bake again!

Oh my yum. Everything on that list sounded wonderful. Thankfully it's almost lunch time! :)

ummm...you just successfully made me want to chow down on carb-o-licious foods! :) i am not looking forward to going back to a low/no carb diet after this baby is born...but oh my, how i am going to need to! at this point, though, carbs are the only thing that keeps me from regular nausea. and by the way...i hear from wendi that you might be interested in meeting up with us maybe...in real life...oh how fun that would be!

I love this post. I am so food driven in terms of the happy times of life.....It leaves me either in the camp of totally splurging, or totally eliminating. I'm in the "trying to eliminate" phase right now, though I'm not as stringent as you are with the carbs.

Mmmmm...carbs.

Now I need a snack!

Happy Easter!

YUM!!! I love chocolate and potatoes. I get the same kind of potato at McAllister's Deli. I didn't know potatoes could grow so big.

Carbs. My nemesis. I am making a hashbrown casserole tomorrow for Easter lunch. I will have Sister Schubert's rolls as well.

Cauliflower fauxtatoes will work in a pinch, but you're right, it's just not the same thing.

And I like thin and crispy pizza with sausage. I'll add some spinach if I want to be healthy.

I'll dip it in ranch dressing if I don't.

It's close to dinner time here and now I'm extra hungry.

Oh, friend, I'm a carb addict too. I love everything on your list. Everything. My hips/thighs/rear end are testament to that.

Happy Easter.

Thanks for joining the fun!

I think if someone said I had to lose the carbs or my my life, I might have to start writing my will. I've never met a carb I didn't like. I'm also very food suggestible and as a result of this list, looking for a snack!

Thanks a lot?!

What a fun list! I think anything your Grandma makes should be in a list by itself and doesn't count :)

#10 could be modified to be "less bad" with brown rice. The beans are a great source of protein.
But the hashbrown dish? I've made that. it's "bad" on so many counts that it's irresistable!

Carolina Mama said...

Happy Easter! And what a list. You are so funny about the potatoes. :) Will stay tuned. God Bless.

Rachelle said...

Hey Girl! Hope you had a wonder Easter today!

Yes - potatoes would be the hard thing for me to kick as well.

I love salsa and pico de gallo and guac, but I don't want to eat chips. I've been eating it on crunchy veggies, but it's not quite the same!

#9 is my absolute weakness. I also sprinkle enough salt on my chips to cause my heart to momentarily stop. I justify the chips by the "goodness" of the salsa. :)
