Hot for the Holidays and Buffets = Evil

I have mentioned a couple of times here that I am on a turtle-paced weight loss journey. I have had some success, and have kept off what I have lost. But it is not enough, and it is not coming off fast enough. So when Missy announced her brand new Hot for the Holidays challenge, I was thrilled. And also a little bit nervous, because she then started talking about posting before and after pictures, and mentioning starting weights and goals. All good things for accountability, but sisters, I am a chicken. That squawking and bawk-bawking you hear would be me running fast and far away from anything that resembles a before picture. So I told Missy that I would be participating, but from afar. Nice and safe, but still a little accountable. And she emailed back that, sure, whatever you want, but it might be nice to lay out some goals.

She was so right. Because it really does help to know where you're going.

So, then - my goals:

1. To amp up the exercise, and focus more on interval training. And also to break out my trusty Tae-bo video (yes, video, as in VHS tape - it's that old). But it is fun and I have lost a lot of weight in the past by doing it faithfully.
2. To limit and hopefully eliminate all bad carbs, sugar, etc.
3. To lose 15 pounds by Christmas. That's totally doable. Then lots more after that, but...baby steps.

And to kick it all off, what better place to go than to a buffet?

Last year, my husband's then-boss gave us a gift card to a local resort/casino here in town. Since this has been a pretty lean year financially for us, we occasionally like to go there and treat ourselves to a free meal. And like all casinos, this one has a buffet, which Ricardo loves. Of course he loves it...he is skin-ny and has to worry more about gaining weight than losing it.

But buffets are evil. They are particularly evil when you have just started a weight-loss challenge. But nonetheless, that's where we headed this evening.

I think I did pretty good. I started out with a heaping plate of salad and veggies, then had some baked fish and more veggies. My splurge was a very small spoonful of mashed potatoes, and they were worth every carbohydrate-laden bite. And I did not get dessert.

I think that bears repeating. I did not get dessert.

My hubby did, though. Lots and lots of it. A chocolate cream puff, and then chocolate cake. Then strawberry cake. Then an ice cream cone. Then he finished off Savannah's ice cream. Then he came home and ate chocolate pudding.

Something is so not fair about this situation.

Ok - in the interest of full disclosure, I did take about 2 bites of hubby's vast sugar selection, but I think I showed some considerable restraint, seeing that I was literally surrounded on all sides by temptation.

So you may have to put up with me posting about this for the next several Fridays until the holidays. I'll try not to bore you - or myself - by keepin' it short and sweet.

Moving on to a happier subject...

Over at the Siesta Fiesta Blog they are organizing a Christmas Ornament Exchange. You may have seen it already and signed up...but if you haven't and are interested in joining in, go on over to find out more about it. I think it's gonna be so much fun and a great way to get to know some more sweet bloggers, and like they said over there - the more, the merrier!

Good for you! Buffets are hard, but I think you earned yourself an A+ last night! And you'll do great in your weight-loss journey...another goal/good tip is to drink tons and tons of water. I'm not very good at this, but I notice that when I really get it I feel and look so much better. Have fun with Billy Blanks!

ps...I got the Starbucks card this weekend, and used it yesterday on a scrumptious Pumpkin Spice Latte. Thank you again so very much! :)

Holding your hand and sweating with you in Seattle. I think I'm going for 12 pounds by Dec. 20th. I'll email you as I think of it. Let's pray each other slim, okay?
You can totally do this, Jackie.

I TOTALLY know how you feel! My hubby is the same way. He eats a ton a food and is right at 160. I just look at a piece of cake and I gain 10 pounds. It's not fair!!! :(

Yeah, I'm a bit of a turtle, too, and I haven't even started my HFTH post. It's lookin' like it's going to fall off the back of the stove.

I hadn't heard about the ornament exchange - that looks like fun!

I'm pulling for you Jackie!

I finally got the background changed on my blog this weekend. It took two whole afternoons with dial up, but I got it figured out, thanks to you!!!

Ahh ... buffets ... obviously created by Satan himself.

Love the challenge and would love to lose 15 pounds by Christmas. Just don't know if I want to be held that accountable until after Christmas.

You can do it, girl.

i totally feel like when i pass on dessert when it's RIGHT THERE, I should automatically lose 5 pounds.

it never works that way, though.

I agree...buffets are most definitely evil! You are going to do great! I sure could stand to join in this challenge, but I am way chicken! I'll keep coming here for my inspiration.

I too am struggling with weight loss and I think you are doing fabulous...to only take two bites of that buffet of desserts your hubby ate...well done...well...done!

you will do great and all things should be done in baby steps. The success is much higher that way.

I'm hearing you about the hubby. Mine is skin-ny as you said. So frustrating.

I joined Curves in May and made a commitment to work-out at least three times a week. It was my first baby step. So far, I have been able to keep up with it. I have had to slowly start changing over eating habits. It is hard! But I have said before that it took 32 yeras to get this way so I can't expect to just change over night.

I'm with ya!!

I'm joining in too but from a distance...I ran yesterday! I was s proud of myself!

Good job you can do it!

Before pictures are totally overrated anyway. :)

Good luck, my friend. Not an easy challenge during the holiday season. But hey, that restraint you showed at the buffet was definitely commendable! If you can do that - you're unstoppable!

I think this is a great format to have accountability and participation. Best wishes to you, I know you can do it.

I'm sure Savannah would be willing to run around and play chase with you. :)

Jackie, I have about 40-45lbs. to lose. One of my main problems is my inability to do much exercise (due to CF complications) and also...lack of discipline. Then add menopause. It's HARD!

My sister went from a size 14 to size 8 last year and has kept it off. It's a constant rebuke to me.

Here's my deal. I never allow pictures of myself. If you post a before picture, I will do this, too. Including my pic. I'll be watching you...

And FANTASTIC job on your great start, at a buffet of all places! I'm proud of you! (Husbands make losing weight much harder, I think!)

Your new blog look is very nice!

You did great - no dessert! That does bear repeating. Keep it up. I agree buffets are evil. :)

Fun and challenging stuff going on in the blog world! I so need to loose weight and started getting serious today. I am going to participate a-far too. I don't think I could do the before picture thing either. I think it is great accountability though. I know you will do great.

Love the comment from His Girl - I couldn't agree more! I just joined Fit Fridays too - I'm loving this little support group. I need it!

Passing up dessert is so hard for me. And like your husband, mine has to work at KEEPING weight on his frame so he's constantly eating. Wouldn't that be a nice problem to have?

Good luck with your goals! I'm proud of you for putting yourself out there--even without the before/after pics it's a courageous thing to do!
